PM GOLDING’S STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF UWI VICE CHANCELLOR EMERITUS, PROFESSOR REX NETTLEFORD:

‘I am deeply saddened at the news, just received, of the passing of Vice Chancellor Emeritus of the University of the West Indies , Professor Rex Nettleford O.J.

Jamaica and the entire world have lost an intellectual and creative genius, a man whose contribution to shaping and projecting the cultural landscape of the entire Caribbean region is unquestionable.

Rex Nettleford was an international icon, a quintessential Caribbean Man, the professor, writer, dancer, manager, orator, critic, and mentor. He has left a void in our world that will be a challenge to fill.

Rex Nettleford has stamped his indelible mark in every chosen field of endeavour and his rich and lasting legacy should be preserved for those who must carry on his life’s work - the emancipation of the Caribbean colonial mind from mental slavery in its quest for identity.

To his family, the UWI community, the members of the National Dance Theatre Company which he founded and led for almost 50 years, his colleagues and friends, I extend heartfelt condolences.’

Embassy of Jamaica, Washington DC:
Haiti Relief Effort

The Embassy of Jamaica, in Washington DC, joins with fellow Jamaicans in the USA and world-wide, in offering sincere condolences to the Government and People of Haiti, on the devastation suffered on 12th January 2010.  The Honourable Prime Minister has pledged Jamaica’s support to the relief and rebuilding efforts underway.

As part of our efforts to assist Haiti and its people, the Embassy takes this opportunity to invite you to contribute to the rebuilding efforts, by recommending the following options:

  1. Send cheques made out to the Embassy of Jamaica with a note in the memo line indicating, “Haiti Disaster Relief”.  All funds collected will form part of Jamaica’s relief effort being organized by the Office of Disaster Preparedness & Emergency Management (ODPEM).  In this way there will be a clear outline of the contribution of Jamaicans in the Diaspora to the process. No cash will be accepted at the Embassy.

  2. Direct lodgments may be made to the ODPEM account for Haitian Relief through the National Commercial Bank in Jamaica.

The relevant account number is: 212-387-304.
