JWOW Donates Over US$100,000 to Several Organizations in Jamaica

The Jamaica Women of Washington Association (JWOW) has contributed US$125,000 or J$9.5 Million to a number of charitable organizations in Jamaica over the last five years. The charities are The Jamaica AIDS Support, Mensana, Community for the Upliftment of the Mentally Ill, the Jamaica Cancer Society, Family and Parent Center and the Western Society for the Upliftment of Chilrdren.
 
This was disclosed by the President of JWOW, Dr. Jaqcueline Watson, at the association's fundraiser and wine-tasting reception held at the Jamaican Embassy in Washington, DC on Wednesday, December 5th.  Dr. Watson told the audience that her association is committed to providing assistance to various health organizations in Jamaica.  She further stated that the mission of JWOW is to raise awareness and provided support to organizations  that focus on improving the health and qualtity of life fo the under-served and vulnerable women, children and families, primarily in Jamaica.  The vision of JWOW, she said, is to be a model philanthropic organization that makes a substantial impact on the lives of the under-served in Jamaica.
 
The JWOW President pointed out that from the staging of the 2007 Tee-off To Good Health Golf Tournament in June, JWOW was able to donate over US$45,000 to community based organizations in Jamaica, with the bulk of the donation going to the Jamaican Cancer Society for the prevention of Prostate Cancer among men.  She also disclosed that the 2009 Golf Tournament will be held in Jamaica, which will also serve to attract tourists to the North Coast.
 
In her remarks, Mrs. Sharon Miller, Charge d'Affaires, Embassy of Jamaica, lauded JWOW for its commitment to Jamaica and the Diaspora. "This level of commitment is rewarding for us as representatives of Jamaica in the United States, as we seek to deepen our relationship between our countrymen in the Diaspora and those at home."  She pointed out that it is not only Jamaica which sees the importance of the Diaspora, but other Caribbean countries have begun to deepen relationship with Diaspora. 
 
Mrs. Miller diclosed that the CARICOM Secretariat has given instructions to find ways of working with the Caribbean Diaspora in the US and other countries for the development of the region. 
 
Washington, DC's First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Fenty, a Board Member of JWOW, lauded the organization for its philanthropic efforts and commitment to Jamaica.  "JWOW has undertaken to assist various health-driven projects in Jamaica, which will no doubt assist thousands of Jamaicans." 
 
The Jamaican Women of Washington Association is in solidarity with Jamaica and is giving back to help improve the lives of many back home
