It is my great pleasure to extend to you warmest and most sincere congratulations on your assumption of the Presidency of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Jamaican Delegation is confident that much will be accomplished during this 62nd United Nations General Assembly under your able leadership. You can be assured of the support of the Jamaican delegation in this endeavour.

To your predecessor, Her Excellency Sheika Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, the Jamaican Delegation extends its appreciation for her unstinting efforts in advancing the work of the General Assembly during the 61st Session.

Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, has proposed that the title of Ambassador for Tourism be conferred on Jamaican pilot, Captain Barrington Irving, for his recent successful historic world mission.

At the World Flight Adventure gala, held in Captain Irving's honour on September 22 at the Florida Memorial University, the Minister said the honour would be in addition to the Order of Distinction, Commander Class (CD), to be conferred on Captain Irving next month at King's House. Praising the young aviator, Mr. Bartlett told the 400 well-wishers who attended the gala, that Mr. Irving has now joined the ranks of many other deserving Jamaicans who had accomplished much in the areas of sports, entertainment and education, among others.

Four students of Jamaican Heritage attending Universities within the Washington Metropolitan Area were the recipients of the first former Jamaican Ambassador to the United States “Dr. Gordon Shirley Book Scholarship” award. The scholarships were awarded by the Jamaican Nationals Association at its annual student reception and book scholarship award on Saturday, October 13th, at the Emory Recreation Center, Washington DC.
