Bruce Golding, conferring on himself the title of "chief servant of the people", yesterday assumed the mantle of Prime Minister of Jamaica, vowing to construct a social and economic ladder to enable the poor and ignored to "climb their way out of poverty".

"The task before me is enormous. But the Lord is the strength of my life. Of nothing shall I be afraid," Golding told a huge, cheering crowd, estimated at approximately 10,000, who gathered on the lawns of King's House to welcome his appointment as Jamaica's eighth prime minister.

Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, has defended the size of his 18-member Cabinet, stating that the size of the executive was appropriate for the challenges that the country faces.

"The Cabinet that I have chosen has been very carefully structured and in my judgment, it is what is necessary; it is what is appropriate for the challenges that face us at this time," Mr. Golding stated at the swearing in of the Cabinet members today (Sept.14) at King's House."

New Prime Minister of Jamaica, Bruce Golding, has pledged that over the next 100 days, action will be taken on a number of initiatives, which are aimed at improving people's lives and the process of governance.

Mr. Golding, who gave the undertaking in his inaugural speech after being sworn in as Jamaica's eighth Prime Minister today (Sept. 11) on the lawns of King's House, said that these initiatives will not require significant government expenditure.

President of the People's National Party (PNP), Portia Simpson Miller has said that the Party accepts the announced preliminary results of the general election, which was held on September 3.

"The People's National Party accepts the announced preliminary results, while reserving all legal rights under the Jamaican constitution and our electoral laws," she said in a statement issued September 4.

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) said on September 4, that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) had picked up an additional seat, moving the preliminary count to 32 seats for the JLP and 28 seats for the PNP.

Today, I assume the office of Prime Minister of Jamaica. I do so with deep humility, knowing well that while it is one of the highest offices of the land, it demands the highest service. The word "Minister" is a Latin word which means "servant". Therefore, today, I have become the chief servant of the people of Jamaica.
