My fellow Jamaicans:

I am honoured to greet you as your ninth Ambassador to the United States.  The observance of this our 46th year of political independence is a fitting occasion for reflection on the sterling achievements which continue to define us as a people.  We ask you to reflect on the theme - “One Love, One Family.”

This year, Jamaicans at home and abroad, recognising our emergence as a nation-state in 1962, will celebrate the 46th year of our Independence with several church services and numerous festive events.

We are a proud people who place great value on our political independence.  In these 46 years, successive governments have made significant strides in the creation of a democratic society in which we value highly the worth of each citizen, while maintaining honourable relations with other nations in this region and around the world.

Wide Range of Activities to Celebrate Jamaica’s Independence in Washington, Virginia and Maryland
Friday, August 1st, 2008

Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica residing in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia will celebrate Jamaica's 46th year of Independence with several events, to be hosted by Jamaican Ambassador to the United States, Anthony Johnson and the Jamaican embassy in Washington, D.C.
The events will commence on Friday, August 1st with a live broadcast of the popular radio morning current affairs show Today with Beverley Anderson Manley from the studios of the Organization of American State (OAS).
