Jamaica Strikes Gold Again in the 4 x 400 meter relay

For the sixth time in these Olympic Games Jamaica has managed to mine gold. The men's 4 x 100m team blew away the competition  breaking the former 16 year world record of 37.40 seconds with a brilliant  37.10 sec.    

The first two legs of the race held strong competition for the entire field however when third leg and 100 and 200 meter world record holder, Usain Bolt, took the baton he broke away from the pack giving Jamaica a confident lead, which was extended when Asafa Powell  brought the team home.

Olympic Games gold medalist Veronica Campnbelll-Brown successfully defended her Women's 200m title, crossing the line for gold at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a personal best of 21.74 seconds.

The 26-year-old was under extra pressure to retain her title after failing to qualify for the 100m at the Jamaican Olympic trials, but she was in control of the 200m race from the gun to the line.

Bolt Breaks World Record and Wins Gold Again

The dramatic ascendance of as the world’s greatest sprinter continued Wednesday night at the Beijing Olympics as he left another group of elite runners far behind in setting a world record in the 200 meters and winning his second gold medal. Having obliterated the world record in the 100 on Saturday, he is the first man to win the 100 and 200 at the same Olympics since in 1984.

Starting in Lane 5, Bolt took the lead in the first 50 meters and won in devastating fashion, pulling away from the field and winning by several meters in a time of 19.30. Michael Johnson had held the record of 19.32, set in 1996 at the Atlanta Games.

Glorious Day for Jamaica

Prime Minister Golding has noted that once again two Jamaicans have made the country extremely proud - Usain Bolt with his world record gold medal victory in the men's 200m final and the Olympic record gold medal by Melaine Walker's in the 400m hurdles, just minutes ago in the Beijing Olympics.

Mr. Golding said that both Bolt and Walker have again demonstrated to the world that discipline, hard work and confidence, are the ingredients that will guarantee success in any endeavour, no matter how difficult or challenging the task.

Usain Bolt of Jamaica has won the Men's 100m gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a world record time of 9.69 seconds. Silver medalist Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago ran a time of 9.89 seconds, leaving American Walter Dix to take the bronze in a time of 9.91 seconds.

The 21-year-old broke his own world record of 9.72 seconds, which he set in June this year.

An overjoyed Prime Minister Bruce Golding, said today (August 17), that the performance of the three Jamaican women in the 100-metre race, at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, was fantastic.

All three places were taken by the women, with Shelly-Ann Fraser, winning the race in 10.78 seconds; and Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson, dead heating for second, in the identical time of 10.98 seconds.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has described the gold winning performance of Usain Bolt, as absolutely phenomenal. Competing in the 100-metre finals in the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, Mr. Bolt won the race in a world record time of 9.69 seconds. Jamaica's other two finalists, Asafa Powell and Michael Frater, finished fifth and sixth, respectively.

"He has worked so hard. It is a great symbol to Jamaica. It is a symbol of the quality of greatness of which we as Jamaicans are capable," Mr. Golding added.

Shericka Williams' Silver Medal Run

Shericka Williams added a silver medal to Jamaica's pot tonight, after running a cleverly-timed race to beat event favourite, Sanya Richards of the USA, who could only manage third.

Britain's Christine Ohuruogu, repeated her performance at last year's World Championships, just holding on from Williams to double as Olympic Champion.
