Joseph A. Whittaker  has been elected the 73rd president of Sigma Xi at the Society's 2008 Annual Meeting in Washington, DC Whittaker who hails from  Falmouth, Trelawny in Jamaica,  will serve as president-elect beginning July 1, 2009.

A Sigma Xi member since 1988, Whittaker is dean and professor of biology in the School of Computer, Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he oversees more than 100 faculty members involved in research, training and educational activities in five academic departments

Jamaican-born Dr. Goulda A. Downer, awarded a US$400,000 Ford Foundation grant to provide mentoring opportunities to Caribbean clinicians interested in honing their skills in HIV diagnosis, treatment, care and support.

Dr. Goulda A. Downer, a Jamaican-born top official at Howard University’s College of Medicine in Washington, DC, was recently awarded a US$400,000 Ford Foundation grant to provide mentoring opportunities to Caribbean clinicians who are interested in honing their skills in HIV diagnosis, treatment, care and support.

The Principal Investigator & Project Director for the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center (NMAETC) in the College of Medicine at Howard University, Downer will use the award on a project to improve the clinical outcomes of Caribbean People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA).
