Efforts to mitigate the impact of Hurricane Dean on the Jamaican economy have been boosted with the signing of a US$10 million loan facility between the Government of Jamaica and the World Bank in Washington, DC.

The Hurricane Dean Emergency Recovery Loan agreement, which was signed on by Minister of Finance and Public Service, Audley Shaw, is aimed at rehabilitating the country's social and economic infrastructure in the aftermath of last year's major storm and seeks to ensure that economic targets are met, despite setbacks resulting from the hurricane.

OAS & UWI Open Campus Sign Memorandum for Distance Course of Education for Democratic Citizenship

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the University of the West Indies Open Campus (UWIOC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to help educators in the English-speaking Caribbean to promote democratic values and practices in their classrooms, schools and communities.

Under the agreement signed concurrently at the OAS in Washington DC and at the UWI Mona Campus in Jamaica a sustainable distance education course will be developed to implement the program.  Course content will be informed by the principles embodied in the Inter-American Democratic Charter, to which Caribbean Member States are signatories.

Hundreds of Medical Professionals to Attend Advancements in Medicine Conference

Hundreds of physicians and health care professionals from North America and the Caribbean are expected to converge at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios next month for the second annual 'Advancements in Medicine' conference.

The event, which will be held from February 20 to 24, is organized by the Minnesota-based Organization for Strategic Development of Jamaica (OSDJ) and the Minnesota Medical Association (MMA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
