Significant sections of the island were severely impacted by Tropical Storm Gustav between Thursday and Friday of last week. While Gustav was not at hurricane strength during its passage across Jamaica, its effect was pronounced because it moved so slowly across the island with extended periods of heavy rainfall resulting in widespread flooding. Total rainfall recorded over the period August 27 -30 ranged between 12 inches in Mandeville and St. Elizabeth to over 19 inches in sections of the Corporate Area.

Representatives of 10 Jamaican organisations in Washington, DC, Baltimore, Virginia and Philadelphia, met on August 30, to discuss assistance, in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Gustav, which affected Jamaica on August 29.

The meeting was called by Ambassador to the United States, Anthony Johnson, to update the various representatives on the situation in Jamaica and what help can be offered. Ambassador Johnson offered to co-ordinate the efforts and noted that the Embassy would serve as the central co-ordination point. He also informed the meeting that a bank account would be opened, where donations could be sent.

Mrs. Lorna Golding, wife of Prime Minister Bruce Golding, has made a strong pitched for education with an appeal to Jamaicans in Atlanta for more support towards the island’s schools.

The request was made as Mrs. Golding spoke at the Benevolent Mission of Atlanta fundraising tea party, at the Villa Christina Restaurant in Atlanta, on Sunday, September 7.

Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, Anthony Johnson, has appealed to Jamaicans residing in that country, to support Jamaica's National Disaster Recovery Fund, which was established by the Government, to assist in resuscitating the country's infrastructure, which sustained significant damage during the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav.
