Usain Bolt Receives Vanguard Award

World and Olympic champion sprinter, Hon. Usain Bolt, O.J., was coferrred with the prestigious Vanguard Award by the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS), at the 16th Annual Caribbean American Heritage Awards Gala, on November 13, at the Renaissance Marriott Hotel, in Washington, D.C.

Jamaica's Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Anthony Johnson, made the presentation to Mr. Bolt's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wellesley Bolt, who accepted the award on behalf of their son, who was unable to attend.

Washington-Based Charity to Donate Neonatal Equipment to Cornwall Regional Hospital

The Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay is to benefit from neonatal equipment valued at $1,780,000 (US$20,000) from Jamaican Women of Washington, Inc. (JWoW).

The equipment includes infant warmers, bilirubinometers, which are used to test infants for jaundice, and pulseoximeters, which measure blood oxygen levels.

JWoW president, Dr. Jackie Watson told JIS News that the money to purchase the equipment was raised at a recent event held at the residence of the Jamaican Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Anthony Johnson. She said that the decision to purchase the equipment, which will be delivered to the hospital shortly, was in response to a request from the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

Jamaican Social Club in Toledo Pledges Continued Support

The Jamaican Social Club of Toledo, Ohio, USA, has pledged to continue supporting sectors in Jamaica that are in need of critical assistance.

This was disclosed by Mr. Earl Mitchell, President of JSCTO, in an overview of the organisation at its 33rd anniversary dinner and dance, at its headquarters on Saturday (November 7).

Atlanta Jamaica Association Looking to Establish Cultural Centre

President elect of the Atlanta Jamaica Association (AJA), Mr. Errol Ritchie, has said that the organisation will be seeking to establish a centre for Jamaican culture, which will provide information, and counselling services to its members and the wider Jamaican community.

The facility, he said, would also serve as the Association's headquarters and assist Jamaicans in the pursuit of their educational goals, inform members of job opportunities, provide housing information to Jamaicans entering Atlanta and provide information to help Jamaicans keep abreast of the political social and economic developments at home.
